Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Juice Cleansing: Benefits of a Juice Cleanse

It's that time of year again, where summer and the promise of sunshine sends everyone to their smartphones, frantically Googling, "How To Get A Bikini Body By THIS Weekend" (no?...just me?...alright then). The summer months seem to induce all sorts of frantic trends and actions, where every girl on Instagram is posting beach selfies and every guy is rocking his right to walk around the park without his shirt on. Between emails and work meetings, you find yourself on Pinterest, looking up "summer salad" recipes and when you manage to steal away for lunch, you head straight to the newest juice bar that's opened up on the corner.

Because in case you haven't noticed, Juice Bars are popping up everywhere these days.

Because in case you haven't noticed, the entire western world is on a juice cleanse right now...which actually provides a really good explanation as to why everyone is always so broke and hangry these days.

Just think: the dude who stole your parking spot—the parking spot for which you’ve been patiently waiting with your blinker light on for more than five minutes as the women in her minivan fixes her lipstick and powders her face and applies another layer of mascara in the rearview mirror before backing out—Yah, that dude who stole YOUR parking spot…he’s probably on a juice cleanse and the lack of solid food has likely affected his ability to perform the monotonous tasks of daily life with any respect or courtesy for others around him.

Come to think of it, the woman in the minivan is also probably on a juice cleanse and is choosing to keep her mind off the fact that there’s definitely a chocolate bar in the glovebox (who doesn’t keep a chocolate bar in the glovebox?), so if she just reapplies a full face of makeup she can actively draw her attention away from the dark chocolate sea salt treat that’s melting between her vehicle registration and minivan manual for at least another five minutes.

Okay, so maybe I'm a little hangry. As for the broke part, I’m currently sinking further into credit card debt because:

     a) I’m a Canadian writer living in London and the exchange on the dollar is enough to make me sick if I think about it too long (like did I really just pay 6 pounds—12 dollars—for a teeny tiny pot of green tea?), and

     b) I’m currently on a juice cleanse.

A typical juice cleanse isn’t cheap and can cost you anywhere from $45 to $75 dollars a day. But if I can justify investing another $75 on yet another Kimono from TopShop, then surely I can invest the same amount into bettering myself on the inside, as well….And I guess that’s just the price of health these days, isn’t it?

This isn’t my first juice cleanse, it’s actually my third in the span of 12 months and the reasons I keep coming back to the juice are myriad. But instead of listing off a bunch of mumbo-jumbo about why I, personally, like juice cleanses (they're trendy, and make you feel skinny) I spoke with a true Nutritionista, to get all the facts right.

Jessica Sweeney, Certified Health and Nutrition Coach, is "on a heart-driven mission to help women live an empowered, inspired, and totally blissed out life." As a health coach, plant-based nutritionist, registered yoga instructor and and co-founder of Urban Alchemy, "Jess has helped hundreds of women tune into their own wisdom, unlock their true potential and awaken their inner alchemist." She's sort of a Jess-of-all-Trades, and having previously owned her own cold-pressed juice delivery service, she also knows a thing or two about juice cleanses.

Juice cleanses are great for anyone looking for a little refresher. Sometimes we just get a little bogged down by the impurities and the hustle n’ bustle of everyday living: processed foods, environmental pollution, negative thoughts, staring at the computer for 8 hours, late nights, energy drinks, etc. These toxins slow our internal processes, both in our body and mind, and if not addressed, can eventually lead to illness. A juice cleanse is a great way to help flush out these toxins and restore the body’s ability to heal itself.
